Beyond Granite: Pulling Together: Live Musical Performance of Ashon T. Crawley’s HOMEGOING

A live performance of Ashon T. Crawley’s HOMEGOING, an audiovisual memorial about the impact of the AIDS crisis that centers spirituality as a means of honoring fallen Black queer church musicians, led by the artist and Clifton Ross III (Musical Director), James Johnson (Assistant Musical Director), and Abdul Hamid Robinson-Royal (Lead Musician).

Event is open to the public, advanced registration is encouraged to receive updates. This is an all-ages, family friendly event.

Due to forecasted evening thunderstorms on Saturday, September 9, the live outdoor performance of Ashon T. Crawley’s HOMEGOING on the National Mall is being moved inside to the nearby Church of the Epiphany (1317 G St NW, Washington, DC 20005). The free concert performance is 7:30-9pm, with doors opening at 6:45pm. We encourage attendees to follow COVID precautions and guests are encouraged to wear masks for this indoor performance as they see fit.

Please be advised that filming and photography will be occurring at this event site, and that the resulting assets may be used for archival or promotional purposes. Should you wish not to be photographed or recorded, please notify one of the event organizers.

Beyond Granite: Pulling Together Public Conversation and Mapping Workshop

A public dialogue on the National Mall facilitated by artist Tiffany Chung with leaders and organizers focusing on the interconnected stories of diverse diasporic refugee and immigrant communities, alongside a mapping workshop to trace participants’ own roots and routes. Event will be held at Constitution Gardens, near Tiffany Chung’s “For the Living” installation.

Featured guest speakers include:

  • Arash Azizzada – Afghans For A Better Tomorrow (AFBT)

  • Meena Javid – Cultural Organizer and Volunteer on behalf of Afghan refugee family resettlement

  • Helal Massomi – Afghan Policy Advisor for Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services

  • Lee Pao Xiong – Founding Director of the Center for Hmong Studies and Professor of Hmong Studies and American Government/Political Science at Concordia University

  • Valerie Plesch – Independent first-generation American-Vietnamese-Argentine photojournalist, documentary photographer, and writer

  • Maryam Yousufi, Journalist and former Voice of America (VOA) in Afghanistan

The Trust for the National Mall invites the public to join us for a Commemorative Birthday Concert honoring the late U.S. Senator Robert J. Dole on the eve of what would have been his 99th birthday. Senator Elizabeth Dole will share tributes to her late husband. Congressman Jim Slattery will also share remembrances of Senator Bob Dole during the program. The concert will be performed by the U.S. Army Blues Band and will feature music from the Big Band era with vocal performance.
