NEWS RELEASE: Trust to Host July 21 Commemorative Concert Honoring Senator Bob Dole

The Trust for the National Mall is pleased to announce it will host a Commemorative Birthday Concert honoring the late Senator Robert J. Dole on July 21, at 5:30 PM EST at the World War II Memorial on the National Mall, on the eve of what would have been the Senator’s 99th birthday. Senator Elizabeth Dole will join us to share a tribute to Senator Bob Dole. The special event will feature a concert by the U.S. Army Blues Band performing Big Band music. Congressman Jim Slattery will also share remembrances of Senator Bob Dole.

NEWS RELEASE: Unveiling Ceremony for the Restoration of the German-American Friendship Garden on the National Mall

Located on the National Mall across from the Ellipse, the German-American Friendship Garden was dedicated in 1988 by German Chancelor Helmut Kohl and President Ronald Reagan to commemorate more than 300 years of German immigration to the U.S. and celebrate the friendship between the two countries. The Trust, with support from the German Embassy, Volkswagen Group of America and additional partners, is celebrating the completion of a multi-year project to rehabilitate the garden and rebuild the two fountains that flank the historic space, centrally located between the White House and the Washington Monument.

A MESSAGE FROM THE TRUST ABOUT CURRENT EVENTS

The events that have unfolded over the last week have been both heart wrenching and thought-provoking.   The senseless loss of lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and many others because of systemic racism and lack of accountability by authorities cannot be washed away as easily as the graffiti that defaced the Lincoln and WWII Memorials last weekend.  We will restore these structures but the damage done by racism in every form is much harder to repair.
