Virtual Option Makes Beloved Cherry Blossoms Accessible to All

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - March 25, 2021 – The Trust for the National Mall and the National Cherry Blossom Festival are thrilled to announce the return of #BloomCam as part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival’s Bloom WatchThe live feed from the Tidal Basin is available now and allows people from around the world to virtually view the beloved blossoming cherry trees in real time through peak bloom, expected April 2 - April 5.

#BloomCam, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) and EarthCam, is streaming live on both the Trust for the National Mall website (here) as well as the National Cherry Blossom Festival website (here) during Bloom Watch providing round- the-clock views of the cherry trees along the National Mall Tidal Basin.

“With limited access to the Tidal Basin this year due to the ongoing pandemic, #BloomCam allows us to once again bring these cherished natural treasures on the National Mall to people everywhere so they can enjoy this spring rite of passage wherever they may be,” said Catherine Townsend, President & CEO of the Trust for the National Mall.

Washington D.C.’s cherry blossoms signal the arrival of spring and symbolize hope, renewal and friendship, and that is especially important right now,” adds Diana Mayhew, President of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. “We are proud to partner with the Trust for the National Mall again to make Bloom Watch via #BloomCam a special experience for people wherever they are this year and especially encourage support for the Endow a Tree Campaign

The goal of #BloomCam is to help build awareness and to build a wider community of support for the long-term care and upkeep of the more than 3,700 Cherry trees on the National Mall. In partnership with the National Cherry Blossom Festival, the Trust seeks to grow their Cherry Tree Endowment to $3.5 million through their Endow a Cherry Tree Campaign to ensure the iconic trees are properly maintained for years to come. In 2020, nearly one million people in 160 countries enjoyed viewing the Cherry Blossoms virtually.
