TEACH 250: INSPIRING A MORE PERFECT UNION SESSION 6
Camp Nelson National Monument
Wednesday, February 12, 2025, 6-7 PM ET
Leading up to the historic 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026, the Trust for the National Mall and National Mall and Memorial Parks are hosting Teach 250: Inspiring a More Perfect Union, a series designed to help prepare teachers for the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence - exploring ways to celebrate, honor, commemorate, and dive deep into America's 250 years of history.
February's program, held on President Lincoln's birthday, will honor his legacy of emancipation by exploring one of the country's newest national monuments: Camp Nelson National Monument in Kentucky. Dive deep into the site's Civil War history, its connections to slavery and freedom, and learn new ways of teaching hard history using primary documents and place-based resources. Organized in conjunction with Commemorative Cultures, a digital humanities project based at the University of St Andrews, this webinar asks: how can we center the voices of enslaved people in our teaching? How might the study of Camp Nelson redefine modern perceptions of Civil War monuments and their role in society today?
