RELEASE: Honoring 110th Anniversary of National Park Service ‘Founders Day,’ TD Bank U.S. Commits $1 Million to Lockkeeper’s House
TD support for Trust for the National Mall honors America’s 250th anniversary and funds restoration, care and programming at oldest built structure at America’s most visited National Park
WASHINGTON, D.C., August 25, 2026 — Trust for the National Mall announced today, on the 110th anniversary of the founding of the National Park Service, that it has received a $1 Million donation from TD Bank U.S. (TD). The gift will support the Trust’s Our Monumental Moment: The Campaign for the National Mall honoring America’s 250th and will fund future preservation and educational programming at the historic Lockkeeper’s House on the Mall. TD is a top 10 U.S. bank with over 10 million clients and a network of approximately 1,050 stores.
The Trust for the National Mall is the nonpartisan, nonprofit philanthropic partner of the National Park Service dedicated to restoring, enriching and preserving the National Mall, which receives more than 36 million visits annually.
Built in 1837, the Lockkeeper’s House serves as a mini museum, welcoming visitors and showcasing the history of the National Mall through an immersive video and educational exhibits. TD’s major gift will allow the National Park Service and the Trust for the National Mall to expand educational opportunities and programs at the facility, including support for the V.I.P. “Volunteers in Parks” that staff the site, as well as carry out important care and maintenance to preserve the almost 200-year-old house.
Currently located on Constitution Avenue near the Washington Monument, the historic structure originally sat at the intersection of the former C&O Canal and the Washington Canal, where the Lockkeeper collected tolls and kept trade records for commerce and merchandise that entered the city. In 2018, the historic House was fully restored and carefully relocated by the Trust for the National Mall thanks to its generous supporters and in partnership with NPS.
“At TD, we are honored to support the Trust and its mission to enrich and preserve one of our country's most beloved treasures: the National Mall,” said Leo Salom, President & CEO, TD Bank U.S. “This $1 million contribution to preserve the Lockkeeper's House reflects our bank's enduring commitment to the United States and the communities we serve. As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, we are proud to help care for the oldest building on the National Mall — a centerpiece of early American commerce — and create new opportunities for visitors to learn about its unique role in the American story."
The Trust’s Our Monumental Moment campaign is raising funds to restore and elevate the National Mall in partnership with the National Park Service in honor of America’s 250th Anniversary. The campaign is supporting transformative restoration projects, including the 56 Signers of the Declaration of Independence Memorial and Constitution Gardens, the expansion of the National Mall Gateway digital education platform and expanded volunteer programming to welcome and engage visitors for generations to come.
“TD’s investment in the Lockkeeper’s House is an investment in the stories that connect us to our nation’s past,” said Catherine Townsend, President & CEO of the Trust for the National Mall. “This historic landmark stands at the heart of America’s Front Yard, and thanks to TD’s partnership, we can better preserve and share its rich history with the millions of visitors who come to the National Mall each year. Announcing this gift on the National Park Service’s Founders Day is especially meaningful, underscoring the essential role that private philanthropy and public-private partnerships play in preserving our national treasures for future generations.”
