What's the Story with the Equal Rights Amendment?

WHAT’S THE STORY WITH THE EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT?

Does the U.S. Constitution guarantee equal rights for all? Women won the right to vote with the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. But the vote was not the end of the fight for equality. In 1923, Alice Paul and the National Woman's Party set out to amend the Constitution again to guarantee equal rights for women under the law. Fifty years ago, on March 22, 1972, Congress passed the Equal Rights Amendment. But then what happened?

Bring your classroom to hear from Park Ranger Susan Philpott of Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument as we explore changing ideas about equality over the last 100 years, and what the future might hold for the ERA. This program is designed for middle and high school audiences.
