Previewing the New Lincoln Memorial Undercroft
Something’s going on underneath the Lincoln Memorial....far, far beneath the memorial honoring America’s 16th president.
The Trust for the National Mall joined its partners at the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation for a behind the scenes tour of the new Lincoln Memorial Undercroft Museum – now under construction on the National Mall.
Coming in 2026 to help celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence, the Lincoln Undercroft will showcase history and the role of the Lincoln Memorial as America’s Civic Stage. The new expanded space, housed several stories below the iconic statue of Abe Lincoln, will feature special exhibition galleries and help make history more accessible for all.
This undertaking is a premiere historic preservation project like no other. The Trust is honored to help support its partners in this unique and historic project on the National Mall.
The Lincoln Memorial also hosted vanessa german’s “Of Thee We Sing” in 2023 when the Trust-led Beyond Granite exhibition presented a dynamic series of art installations on the National Mall, creating a more inclusive, equitable, and representative commemorative landscape and bringing new stories and perspectives to the nation’s most iconic commemorative space.
