The Trust for the National Mall Hosts Monumental View Reception Celebrating Fall on the Mall

THE TRUST GATHERS LONGSTANDING BENEFACTORS, CORPORATE PARTNERS AND FRIENDS FOR A ROOFTOP RECEPTION

On October 25, 2022 the Trust gathered with supporters and friends on the rooftop of its office building for a reception overlooking moody and beautiful autumnal views of the National Mall. As guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, chatted with friends old and new, and took in the spectacular monuments and memorials, the sunset colored the sky with warm pink tones.

President and CEO of the Trust for the National Mall Catherine Townsend made remarks highlighting the invaluable support of our partners at the National Park Service, corporate and individual supporters, and volunteers who make our crucial work on America’s Front Yard possible. National Park Service Deputy Director for Congressional and External Relations Mike Reynolds spoke about the partnership and collaboration between the Trust for the National Mall and National Park Service to achieve their shared goals and mission—to restore, maintain and tackle challenges to preserve the National Mall for visitors all over the world to enjoy for generations to come.

With the Washington Monument towering against the backdrop, our guest speaker Outerbridge Horsey, Vice President of the Washington National Monument Society, shared some little-known history about the Washington Monument’s design and construction. Including…

  • The effort to create a monument to George Washington began in 1793, not long after the Revolutionary War, and illustrates what is the first public-private partnership on the National Mall.

  • At one point, the Monument sat unfinished for 25 years. Construction stalled in 1856 and the Washington Monument would not be completed until 1888.

  • The marble used to create the Monument originates from a quarry that has now been repurposed as a swimming hole!

The Trust is grateful to all who joined us for the evening to take in the incredible scenery during one of the most picturesque seasons—Fall on the National Mall. As many of you glimpsed the incredible view for the first time with awe—we were reminded of the importance of preserving, restoring and enriching this important space that we are grateful to steward each and every day.
