Home Depot Foundation Volunteers Kick-Off Day of Service to Upgrade Kiosks Near Veterans' Memorials

Home Depot, HOME DEPOT FOUNDATION, CLARK CONSTRUCTION Volunteers Renovate and Upgrade Information Kiosks Near Vietnam Veterans and Korean War Veterans Memorials

On Thursday, September 22, 2022, the Trust for the National Mall and the National Park Service kicked off a new project with Home Depot and Clark Construction and welcomed over 100 volunteers from the Home Depot Foundation to carry out major repairs to the green-topped information kiosks on the National Mall.

The kiosks—the green-topped buildings near the Korean War Veterans and Vietnam War Veterans memorials utilized by the National Park Service rangers, volunteers, and staff—were in need of repair and updates to outdated and inefficient amenities. In addition to providing orientation and information services for the millions of visitors to the National Mall each year, volunteers and rangers at the kiosks assist families of fallen servicemembers in finding the names of their loved ones at the memorials built to honor their service.

Volunteers first gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial in their branded attire to hear opening remarks from National Mall and Memorial Parks Superintendent Jeff Reinbold, Team Depot Captain Orrin Burkett, Trust CEO and President Catherine Townsend, and Clark Construction Superintendent Sami Wallace.

Team Depot, the Home Depot’s associate volunteer force, kicked-off the repairs with an incredible team chant that energized the participants and previewed the energy and enthusiasm that volunteers sustained throughout the day’s work.

Volunteers then grabbed their paintbrushes, pulled on their gloves and gathered their paint buckets to begin painting the interiors of the kiosks, clean the cabinetry, and clean the ceiling and roofing, among other tasks. The Trust and National Park Service are incredibly grateful to the volunteer force from Clark Construction for spending time prepping the kiosks and the Home Depot team for ensuring that the National Mall remains a vibrant space for all. The Trust is pleased that volunteers who staff the kiosks will soon have a safer, more efficient space to welcome, greet and assist visitors to the National Mall. Stay tuned for the before and after!

The Trust works to preserve and restore crucial infrastructure on the National Mall, like the information kiosks, with your generous support. Thank you!
