Celebrating a Mounted Unit Retirement: Happy Trails to Tedi

The U.S. Park Police Mounted Unit marked the retirement of beloved U.S. Park Police Horse "Tedi" on January 21 on America’s Front Yard. Tedi joined the Mounted Unit in 2010 and was the longest-serving horse in the history of the unit.

Tedi’s first rider, HMP Ofc. Gonzales, retired 2018, and Tedi’s most recent rider, HMP Ofc. Lawston joined the retirement ceremony, along with current U.S. Park Police horses and officers on the National Mall.

The USPP says that Tedi (full name T. Edward Bear) has been instrumental in training Horse Mounted Patrol officers by providing a safe and reliable platform for new riders learning mounted patrol operations. They also noted his work to support community outreach efforts and wellness initiatives, including veteran outreach programs such as the Wounded Warrior Project.

In 2023, the Trust for the National Mall and the National Park Service unveiled the new Horse Stables and Wells Fargo Education Center on the National Mall. The Trust led this transformational project to replace and upgrade the original horse stables built in the 1970’s and to create the new Education Center in partnership with the National Park Service and the United States Park Police Mounted Unit. This exciting project was designed and built by the Trust for the National Mall and entirely funded by private philanthropy, thanks to its generous supporters. Plan your visit to the Wells Fargo Education Center here.
