CBS Evening News: Cherry blossoms mark the beginning of spring

CBS Evening News’ Norah O’Donnell visited the Tidal Basin to tour the cherry blossoms amidst the peak bloom season and spoke to National Park Service Arborist Matthew Morrisson about caring for the beloved cherry trees.

Visitors flock to the National Mall each spring to witness this grand Washington tradition unfurl on America’s Front Yard. The foot traffic, along with more extreme temperature fluctuations and flooding, can hurt the roots of the trees and poses risks to the longevity and health of the cherry blossoms. There are over 3,000 cherry trees on the National Mall, all of which need our care and support year-round to ensure that the blooms can be enjoyed and inspire future generations.
