Hundreds Attend The District Cup Benefiting The Trust for the National Mall
June 24, 2019
On Saturday, June 22, 500+ people from the DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas ranging from young professional spectators to polo enthusiasts gathered at the National Mall for the The District Cup Annual Polo Match & Beneficiary Event. The premier annual polo match on “America’s Front Yard”, brings communities together to enjoy a day of fellowship and philanthropy, while watching one of the oldest competitive sports known to man, dating back to the fifth century B.C.
The 2019 beneficiary of the District Cup is the Trust for the National Mall's Campaign to Rebuild the U.S. Park Police Horse Stables. Built more than 40 years ago as a temporary facility, the stables on the National Mall are in disrepair. Construction of a new stable is urgently needed to improve the facility unit, including improved turn-out, proper drainage, secure police staff offices and an interactive educational area for visitors. Once completed, the new U.S. Park Police Horse Stables will be a state-of-the-art facility and an integral destination for National Mall visitors. For more information on the campaign, click here.
The event was catered with gourmet food from Recess Catering. Key sponsors of this year’s event included MGM National Harbor, US Polo Association, Jack Rich Family Foundation, Net Jets, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, and The Salamander Resort & Spa. Honorary guests of the event included Sheila Johnson, President & CEO of the Salamander Resort & Spa, Catherine Townsend, President & CEO of The Trust for the National Mall, Chip & Sally Akridge, Founder and Chairman of the Trust for the National Mall, Megan Eunpu, Miss DC for America 2019, and Nacho Figueras, the headlining polo player from Argentina.
