I’m thrilled that new landmark legislation—the Great American Outdoors Act –will finally provide another round of funding for critical infrastructure repairs and upgrades – so our national parks can continue to be accessible and safe for the public to visit and enjoy. As the founder of the Trust for the National Mall over 13 years ago, I have been advocating for upgrades to the National Mall for 20 years, so this is finally a dream come true.

As we prepare for the Independence Day holiday, I wanted to send my good wishes for a chance to rest, recharge and reflect on what freedom and independence mean to each of us, as individuals, communities and as a nation. A MESSAGE FROM THE TRUST ABOUT CURRENT EVENTS

The events that have unfolded over the last week have been both heart wrenching and thought-provoking.   The senseless loss of lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and many others because of systemic racism and lack of accountability by authorities cannot be washed away as easily as the graffiti that defaced the Lincoln and WWII Memorials last weekend.  We will restore these structures but the damage done by racism in every form is much harder to repair.

Memorial Day 2020: Virtual Commemorations on the National Mall

Even though traditional Memorial Day ceremonies and events on the National Mall will not take place this year due to the ongoing safeguards against the coronavirus pandemic, the National Park Service and its partners at the various veterans’ and service memorials will still honor those who gave their lives in defense of the country through virtual and online programming.
